Ingredients
  

Cheese Sauce Base
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese shredded
  • 1 cup milk whole or 2%
  • 2 tablespoons butter unsalted
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional for heat
  • 1 teaspoon salt to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper to taste

Method
 

Prepare the Cheese Sauce
  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
  2. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute until bubbly.
  3. Gradually add the milk, whisking continuously to avoid lumps.
  4. Continue to cook until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
  5. Reduce heat to low and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
  6. Add garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.
  7. Serve warm over nachos or as a dip.

Notes

For a smoother sauce, use freshly shredded cheese instead of pre-shredded cheese.
